Syracuse, N.Y. — While hilltops were getting a foot or more of wet snow from the storm of the past two days, Syracuse eked out just enough to be measured.
Officially, 0.2 inches of snow fell today at Hancock International Airport, the official climate station for the National Weather Service. That was barely enough to make the grass a little white, but it counts.
Like many early season storms, when temperatures are warmer than mid-winter, this one was what meteorologists call “elevation-dependent.” That is, if you were at 1,000 feet or so above sea level, you probably got snow. Below that you probably had all rain, or maybe just some fat white flakes mixed in with rain.
Two spots in the Catskills had more than 16 inches of snow, and plenty of locations in the hills of the Southern Tier and southern Madison and Onondaga counties saw 8 inches or more.
The snow was wet and heavy, enough to make wires sag and tree branches snap. More than 1,000 utility customers in Onondaga County were without power this morning.
The elevation dependence showed up in which schools closed and which stayed open. Those in the hills, like Cazenovia and Tully, closed today because of slippery road conditions. At lower elevations like Syracuse and Chittenano, schools remained open.
